Workshop on Research Leadership for Commonwealth Climate Research Cohort 2021

A workshop on Research Leadership for Commonwealth Climate Research Cohort 2021 was delivered on 14th and 15th April 2021 via zoom. The aim of this workshop was to enhance the knowledge and skills on research leadership of the 26 rising- star local researchers of the Commonwealth Climate Research Cohort 2021. The members of cohort are based at 25 ACU member universities from 16 countries. 

This workshop was moderated and delivered by Dr. A.M.A. Saja of South Eastern University of Sri Lanka and Dr. Novil Wijesekara, who is the course coordinator of the Post Graduate Diploma in Health Sector Disaster Management at the University of Colombo and the Managing Director – Resilience Research Training and Consulting.

One of the key sessions “Becoming a leader in research” was conducted by a prominent academic who was Vice Chair of the UN Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC-AR4) and shared the 2007 Nobel Prize for Peace, Prof. Mohan Munasinghe.

One participant said that ” this workshop is a turning point in my carrier, and the technical aspects discussed and the tools”. Another participant commented the tools introduced in the workshop, said ” excited about the tools that were introduced and the technology used to engage us during the workshop are definitely useful”.

This workshop focused on introducing the concept of research leadership, different leadership and management styles, and what this means in practice. The workshop explored concepts related to stakeholder engagement, equitable partnerships, and research culture. The workshop helped the participants to understand what research leadership means to them, what their current strengths and weaknesses are, and what skills they need to develop.
