Climate Action Champions Network (CACN) visited Sri Lanka’s eastern coast climate hotspots

In our recent exploration of Sri Lanka’s Eastern Province with CACN, we delved into the profound impacts of climate change along the Eastern coast. Our journey commenced at the Sand Dunes in Pottuvil, where CACN team examined the area for invasive plant species and conducted a survey within the local communities to analyze their perception of climate change effects.

Our next destination was Aqsha Vidyalaya in Oluvil, a remote school serving around 50 students from Grade 01 to Grade 05. Here, the CACN champions conducted an enlightening session on climate change awareness, accompanied by the donation of books and essential stationery items.

The third leg of the expedition took us to the Garbage Dump near an area known as ‘Ashraf Nagar.’ This dump accumulates waste from various regions, including Sammanthurai, Kalmunai, Karaitheevu, Ninthavur, Addalachchenai, Akkaraipattu, and Alaiyadi Vembu. Slowly encroaching on adjacent forests, it has become easily accessible to wild elephants in Oluvil. Here, the team scrutinized the garbage management system, recognizing its implications not only on the environment but also on the lives of numerous elephants and other wildlife in the vicinity.

On the next day, CACN team explored the Kayankerni Marine Sanctuary, a vital marine protected area with significant ecological value. Our engagement extended to the local fisherman community, where the team facilitated a focus group discussion. During this session, we discussed the climate change issues they have experienced over the years and its impact on their lifestyles and livelihoods.
